The Electrik Avenue

The Electrik Avenue as played on 21/03/2014

T&T can boast that we never suffer a dull Friday night. Adding to the entertainment flavor Hydrotone’s Electrick Avenue show on Hott 93.5 fills the airwaves with a spectrum of EDM beats. The show's hosts Tony Hydro, Luvglo and Arc 9 take the stage both to entertain and educate EDM addicts through the night.

I was invited to come on to the show for an interview with Tony to let listeners know about the REDM movement. While there I took the opportunity to get some background on the show’s host Anthony Tony Hydro DeFour.

Born in Trinidad, he moved to New York after high school. By this point he was not yet exposed to the music he would eventually devote himself to.

His neighbor invited him to a party; there Anthony was exposed to house music. He his neighbor who you could call his first mentor told him to take two tracks and make them sync and so began his career as an EDM DJ. From there he moved on to playing at major clubs in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Long Island while building his brand HYDROTONE.

After the passing of his father Anthony dropped everything he had built in New York to be with his mother. As he go back to Trinidad he experienced culture shock. He was in his homeland but what he found was not what he expected. The musical arts were being stifled there was no EDM, Jazz, Rock ... nothing on the radio but Pop, Soca and Chutny. He poured everything into creating HYDROTONE in Trinidad, hosting a mass of events and supporting as many Dj's a possible to bring EDM back.
HYDROTONE Global Underground Established 1994 was Anthony's brainchild, Hydro meaning water and Tone meaning sound, the sounds in the T&T island. Hydrotone is geared toward bringing EDM to the public by filling the need for Promoters of DJs, Producers, Artists, Fashion, Venues, and Music.

Despite the wave of cultural rejection for EDM on a large scale, HYDROTONE was able to secure a spot on 93.5 where the Electrik Avenue show would make its mark in Trinidad's EDM world. She show sports every form of EDM Big house, Trance, Tribal, Progressive, Dubstep, D&B just to name a few. It's an opportunity for the EDM fans to get deeper underground and for anyone looking to get into something new to experience what an EDM show is about. The crew takes time not only to put on a baller show but to let listeners know what they are listening to so they can dig for themselves and find music they love. Also the crew posts the names of each track to their facebook page in real time along links to the entire show on facebook for listeners to download.

A small sound clip from the interview check it out

I really thank Tony not only for inviting me to the show, but also all the Electrick Avenue Dj's Loveglo and Arc9 along with all of Hydrotone productions for keeping up the fight. Trinidad is not the exemplar of change and difference, the very moment something is not mainstream or a part of r existing culture we tend to stick up our noses and say things like "wuh es daaa" "nah nah nah not here" "I doh like da" but you all chose for one reason or another to stay here in your homeland and bring something new and different to the table. There is something to really be appreciative about in that. I hope this work not only continues to flourish but it continues to open people’s minds to genre.
