Sunset Returns 2015

EDM in Trinidad is coming to recognize December as the month of Sunset Festival. After last year’s Skrillex performance a number of fans were wondering how could the folks at @SunsetFestivalTT possibly top that. Two words Martin Garix. This really did it for the crowd not a one up on lord master Skrillex in our opinion but the crowd would beg to differ. If this year had a theme it would be “bigger” this year everything was turned up to eleven, as we entered what it now jokingly called EDM Park “O2 Park” from first sight you could tell that this was going to be epic.

The lineup was excellent with the #3 and #20 ranked DJ’s on DJ Mag top 100 list for 2015, in addition the maddest and baddest that Trinidad has to offer Bunji Garlin.

Colony
Ultimate Rejects
Valstar
System32
Marcus Williams
Jerry West
Martin Garix
Major Lazer
Bunji Garlin
Bass Gang
Dei Musicale

All the performances were off the chain; you can really tell when a DJ is nailing the “vibe” when the crowd gives off as much as the crowd enjoys the set. Top performance was Major Lazer, no bias attached. Garix delivered a stellar show, Animals was the only track necessary to get the crowd moving, everything else was just gravy. Lazer topped Garix in our opinion, he knows his Trini crowd and spun them into flurry of wild raving.

Don’t think for a second the local performances pulled any punches, Bass Gang and Ultimate Rejects released the Krakens for this one. System32’s performance was rattled by technical difficulties their set followed up Lazer’s with a sneaky slip in of Star Wars theme, yea we caught you, to some heavy CDM for those who stayed back after the main event.

Immediately after Lazer's set the flock of people leaving before the last performance was a distressing sight. If you love EDM stay and enjoy the whole show. However it is understandable for some to leave as the following day was a work day. Something for the organizers to consider in that.

We love you O2
but it's time for us to move on. The typical one way in one way out of Carenage issue still stands however a new problem is emerging, there just is not enough space at O2 or at the very least it's not being well used. Getting from point A to point B was a disaster even in what we sarcastically call VIP. There were so many people in VIP that general seemed like the better bet. There really is no justifiable reason for the VIP expense, it's almost the same as general.

Where were the EDM "Animals"
A particular disappointing observation was the lack of “Animals”. Martin Garix people! Where were you? There was such a lack of themed enthusiasm among the crowd. Considering EDM culture, animal masks were a given for this event and it sorely lacked. That and the want of more LED and glow sticks etc was a major letdown. It felt like Major left the Lazer home. If it were not for GlowTT there would have been nothing at all, and what’s EDM without a little glow.

At the end “WETMAN” won a Grand Vitara so best party everrrr for him. Special shoutouts to @NorthEleven on the outstanding work as always, really impressed with the work that these guys do, all in all awesome event. People wonder if EDM has a future in Trinidad, let these events be a standard to show that Trinidad and Tobago is ready, was ready, and will forever be ready for anything the musical world has to throw at us.

Nutshell Review
Pros
Tight Security
Awesome Lineup
Good Food (Those hotdogs were ridiculously good)
Good lighting and effects

Cons
Venue: with the EDM scene growing as it is, maybe its time for a bigger venue.
No "Animals" in a Gaix concert
Date: Sunday not a fan favorite among the working people.
